Barbara Jean Harris Black

Mrs. Barbara Jean Harris Black was born on June 16, 1939, in Durham, NC, the youngest of three beautiful daughters of the late Robert Bealey Harris and Maude Judd Harris. She was called home on August 17, 2026, in Charleston, WV.

Barbara married her elementary school sweetheart, SGM Fred D. Black, Jr., and to their 56-year union, four children were born: Michael Black in Fort Bragg, NC; Monika Black in Okinawa, Japan; Markita Black in the Panama Canal Zone, Panama; and Martin Black in Fort Gordon, GA. In addition, she lovingly raised her grandson Marcus Black of Charleston, WV.

Barbara came to West Virginia in 1978 when her husband, SGM Fred D. Black, Jr., joined the faculty of West Virginia State University. Barbara soon joined WVSU as the Administrative Assistant for Human Resources, where she became known as an unofficial ambassador for the school through her infectious, outgoing personality and work with the “W” Club. Barbara was also a proud, active member of The Links, Inc., where she supported multiple community projects.

Barbara accepted Christ and joined First Baptist Church of Charleston, WV, where she remained a devoted member.

Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, SGM Fred D. Black, Jr.; her parents, Robert Bealey Harris and Maude Judd Harris; her sister, Bernice Harris; and her eldest son, Michael Black.

Barbara is survived and will be deeply missed by her three children; three grandchildren, Marcus Black, Gabriella Black, and Logan Black; her sister, Lorrine Horner; a host of nieces, nephews, brother and sisters-in-law.

The family of Barbara Black would like to thank the staff of WVU Medicine Thomas Memorial Hospital, Charleston Healthcare Center, and Vandalia Health CAMC Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care and support.

Barbara’s homegoing service will be held at 12 pm on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at First Baptist Church in Charleston with Pastor Paul Dunn officiating. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service. The burial will follow at Donel C. Kinnard.

Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, the family suggests sending donations to First Baptist Church of Charleston, West Virginia, in honor of Barbara Black.
