Obituary

Barbara Elizabeth Mason Mayhan, 77, formerly of Temple Hills, MD, transitioned from life on this earth to live with her father in Heaven on Monday, May 2, 2022 in Dunbar, WV after a long illness.

She was born on July 21, 1944 in Charleston, WV to the late Sidney Roosevelt Mason, Sr. and Helen Faucett Mason.

Barbara attended Kanawha County public schools, where she graduated from Charleston High School in 1962. She pursued her education in multiple areas of study, including advertising and design at the Washington Technical Institute from 1972-1974. Barbara graduated at the head of her class from Chamberlin Carver Center in 1987 with a degree in cosmetology and then barber school while working full time and attending night school. She was very driven, which led her to further her education in Cosmetology management in 1988.

She accepted Christ as he Savior at an early age and was baptized at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Charleston. As an adult, Barbara was an active member of Deliverance Free Will Baptist Church in Temple Hills, MD where the pastor is Dr. William E. Peterson. She faithfully served in the choir and was a regular member of Sunday school and Wednesday night bible study. Dr. Peterson stated that Barbara was very quiet and never caused any trouble. She endeavored to ensure that her grandchildren knew about Christ by taking them to church.

As a child, Barbara's hobbies were art, design and hair. She was a long time employee of Sears and Roebuck Co. Barbara also enjoyed traveling. Some of her trips were to the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, MD and Panama.

She was married to Clyde Mayhan, Jr. in 1972 and to this union one daughter, Quinette Suraé, was born.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her long time friend, Mrs. Fletcher; and her grand-dog, Remy.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Quinette Suraé Mayhan Gross; son-in-law, James Anthony Gross; grandchildren, Shanari Jamila Gross and Clyde Jackson Gross; great-grandson, JaMari Halo Gross; siblings, Sylvia Annette Mason Daniely (Dan) of Byron, GA, Sidney Roosevelt Mason, Jr., (Karen) of Cincinnati, OH, Willis Elaine Mason Brooks (William) of Dunbar and Allen Denise Mason Dowell (Adrian) of Salem, VA; god-daughter, Zuleika Dudley; long time friend, Lillian Brown; a host of nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins and friends.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude for all the prayers, words of comfort, love and all acts of kindness shown them during the illness and transition of their family members. Special thanks to the Crossroads Fellowship family; Dwayne, Quawanna, Stacy and the staff of Genesis Dunbar Center, 100 Hall; as well as the friends and family who assisted in her care prior to her admittance to the Genesis Dunbar Center.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 13, in Sunset Memorial Park, 4301 MacCorkle Ave. SW, South Charleston, WV 25309, with Rev. Adrian E. Dowell, Sr. of Shiloh Baptist Church, Salem, VA. officiating.

Friends may visit one hour prior to the service at the cemetery.
