Obituary

Bennett E. "Joe" Barnes, 83, of Cross Lanes, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Thomas Memorial Hospital after suffering multiple major illnesses.

He was born on April 20, 1940 in Brunswick County, NC, to the late Rufus and Annie Mae Lewis Barnes.

After graduating from Roseboro High School, Joe attended several colleges and was awarded his Bachelor's Degree from WV State College. This led to multiple jobs before partnering with this friend Dan Cantley, to start Mountaineer First Aid & Safety at which he stayed until retirement.

Playing golf with his family and friends was something he enjoyed. However, his most joy came from singing gospel music and was with several gospel groups in North Carolina. Upon moving to West Virginia he and Conrad Cummings started a new WV based Patriots Quartet that ministered in the tristate area. Later, he played piano and sang at Tyler Heights  Community Church in Cross Lanes until his health worsened. Serving the Lord through gospel singing was his life.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his two sisters, JoAnn and "Pete"; one brother, Ray; and his precious dog, Suzie.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Phyllis; brother, Edwin and wife Shirley of Winston Salem, NC; and Penny and husband Mike Fruchey, his daughter in Conway, SC.

Many thanks go to Pastor Terry Thompson, Yvette "Pinky" Wood, Ed "Tooter" Casto, and many other family members and church family. Dr. Ashish Sheth and his entire staff have been remarkable in showing so much compassion and support. Much love to you all.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 7, in the mausoleum in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes, with Pastor Terry Thompson officiating.

Friends may visit from 1:30 to 2 p.m. in the mausoleum in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
