Obituary

Bernice E. Endres, 93 of Charleston/Goldtown, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2014 surrounded by her family.

Bernice was born in Moberly, MO on September 30, 1920.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norbert A. Endres, grandsons, Charles (Chip) Endres and Joshua Endres.

Bernice is survived by her thirteen children; eight sons, Joseph of Menlo GA, Anthony (Jeane) of Yorba Linda, CA, Gerard (Vicki) of St. Albans, Frank (Sharon) of Corpus Christi, TX, Pat (Mendy) of Wellington, FL, Michael (Filiz), John and Jude all of Boca Raton, FL; five daughters, Anne (Tom) Danowski of Warrenton, VA, Theresa (John) Baisden of Aurora, IL, Margaret Taylor of Winter Springs, FL, Mary (Joe) Thomas of Aiken, SC, and Joan (Jim) Namey, Goldtown; 34 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Bernice was an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church since moving to Charleston 70 years ago. She was a member of several Christian organizations within this parish including Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary, Confraternity of Christian Mothers, Third Order of St. Francis and the Padua Society

Raising 13 children was never an excuse for not volunteering. Bernice devoted her life to serving others. She was a longtime member of a local Al-Anon group where she counseled numerous people in need through their difficult situations. She also assisted in sponsoring an Al-Ateen group. Additionally, for several years, on Friday evenings after work, she answered phones at a crisis hotline center for Contact Teleministries, USA.

She worked with Catholic Children's Charities, through which she provided unwed mothers a home away from home during their pregnancies. She served in a ministry through church visiting the sick, elderly and dying; praying with them and administering Holy Communion. This ministry led Bernice to more than 10 years of volunteer service through Hospice. Bernice knitted dozens of baby blankets, which she donated to CAMC Women's and Children's Hospital for mothers of stillborn babies to lovingly wrap and hold them. Many additional services included making cheerleading uniforms, organizing as well as baking items for fund raising and church bazaars. She volunteered to assist in the pre-school classes, reading to children in the school's library and assisting with vacation bible school. She was a core group member for the R.C.I.A program for people interested in Catholicism.

Bernice was awarded the " WSAZ-TV Tri State Mother of the Year" in 1965. She received the Hospice Volunteer of the Month Award and in 2004, Saint Anthony's Parish awarded her the "Lifetime Achievement Award" for her dedicated service to the church and school.

Six years after her husband's death, Bernice's youngest daughter and her family invited her to share their home in Goldtown. For the past 12 years, Joan and Jim Namey along with their children Angie and Zack cared for her as her health began to decline.

The family would like to thank Igy and girls who cared for Bernice over the past few years with special thanks to Betty Casto for her loving care in Bernice's final year. We would also like to thank the Hospice workers for their professional and loving attention given to Bernice over the past several months.

Bernice will always be remembered for her loving demeanor, listening ear, compassionate heart and giving spirit.
