Bette M. Hardin, 90, of Dunbar died June 19, 2014, following an extended illness.
Bette was born October 26, 1923 in Athens County Ohio, daughter of the late John and Sarah "Ella" Snyder Shepard. She was preceded in death by her husband Lewis F. "Red" Hardin, her parents and six siblings.
She is survived by her children, Dr. Kevin (Sandra) Hardin of Indianapolis, IN, Melissa (Donald) Swick of Charleston, WV and three grandchildren; Elizabeth Swick, Patricia Hardin and Stephen Hardin. She also leaves behind her beloved cat Tabby.
Bette graduated Valedictorian of Hollister High School, Glouster, OH in 1941 and soon after entered the work force during the shortage of male workers in World War II as a telegrapher for the New York Central Railroad. She retired 41 years later from Conrail Railroad. Stemming from her occupation, Bette had a lifelong love of trains.
She enjoyed travel, which she was able to do extensively after her retirement, both in the United States and abroad, visiting many countries and all but two states; but she always loved coming home to the West Virginia hills. Bette loved to read, to cook and eat, share memories, joke and have fun, and "keep her hands busy" knitting and crotcheting. She created many beautiful afghans and toys over the years that she enjoyed giving to family and friends. Bette volunteered several years for HospiceCareWV where she made many friends. She loved the Dunbar Presbyterian Church where she was a faithful member, enjoying the Faith and Love Circle, the Mary Juillerat Sunday School Class, and the Young at Heart fellowship.
A service to celebrate the life of Bette will be held at 1p.m., Monday, June 23, at the First Presbyterian Church of Dunbar with the Rev. Dr. Patricia Jarvis officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.
Visitation will be from 12 noon to 1p.m. at the church immediately preceding the service.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Paul Kuryla and staff at Dunbar Medical Associates, Dr. Joby Joseph and staff, the wonderful, caring staff at Dunbar Genesis Center, and Bette's church family, neighbors and friends, all of whom supported her along the way.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to First Presbyterian Church of Dunbar, 1414 Myers Ave. Dunbar, WV 25064.
