Betty Lee Burns, 90, of Dunbar was born on August 2, 1926 in Ward, West Virginia and passed through Heaven's portal on October 21, 2016.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Burns; parents, Ray and Elma Adkins, Sr.; and sister, Wanda Straub.
Betty is survived by her sons, Ansel Terry Burns of Dunbar and Dr. Bruce E. (Eileen Meyer) Burns of Birmingham, Alabama; grandchild, Brittany Burns; great-grandchild, Brantley Walker; brother, Ray Adkins, Jr. of Beaver; and sister, Patty Adkins of South Charleston. She is also survived by her nieces, Pamela (George) Warden, Penny Bice, Cheryl Bice; great-niece, Elaine Wyatt; great-great nephew, Jordan Wyatt; and numerous other nieces and nephews all of whom she was extremely proud.
She loved the Lord Jesus Christ with all of her heart and was saved when she was eleven years old. She served the Lord in whatever way she was called until she was physically unable to do so in the last few months of her life.
Her two sons, Terry and Bruce, were the pride and joy of her life. She loved them with all of her heart and would tell everyone she met how proud she was of "her boys."
Betty was a graduate of Eagle Rock High School in Virginia, and received an Associate's Degree in Business from the Charleston, West Virginia School of Commerce. She also attended West Virginia State College where she took classes in childcare, one of the great passions of her life. She worked as an accountant in Dunbar and for a publishing company in South Charleston; however her main employment was serving God as the Director of Children's Ministry of the Dunbar First Baptist Church.
She became a member of the Dunbar First Baptist Church in 1965 after her husband, Alvin passed away. She was assistant teacher in the nursery school for four years, taught the three-year old class for 11 years, and the four-year old class for three years. Betty served on the Deaconess Board for nine years and as Chairperson for one year. For 24 years she served as counselor for the Children's Evening Fellowship, and also directed Bible School.
In addition to serving as the Director of Children's Ministry, her other services to the Lord included singing in the choir, counselor at her beloved Baptist Church Camp, Camp Cowen, for 30 years, and serving as chairperson on the Christian Board of Education. She was instrumental in building the new section of Dunbar First Baptist Church. She worked in whatever capacity was needed including carrying insulation, sweeping, mopping, interior painting, and cooking for the other workers. She was active in the church until her mid-seventies by teaching Sunday School Middles, Wednesday Night Juniors Bible Study, and Primary Church on Sundays. She was a member of the church choir until she was 88 and helped feed those in need until she was 89 years old.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26 at Dunbar First Baptist Church conducted by Senior Pastor Jason Quintrell.
Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the church.
Arrangements are in care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
