Betty Lou Hickman Carney was called home by the Lord in the early hours of April 9, 2018, after a sudden illness.  She passed away peacefully in Hubbard Hospice House West, just days after her 65 ^th wedding anniversary with Jerry W. Carney.

Betty was known and respected as a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

She was a life-long resident of West Virginia. Betty enjoyed tracing her family's story and discovered her ancestors were involved not only in state history, but also early American history. Through the Balch family, which is centered in the New England area, Betty tied her family directly to troops serving General George Washington

Betty was a member of Dunbar High School Class of 1952.  Less than a year after graduation she married the man she loved, Jerry W. Carney.

She was a well-known church secretary at First Church United Methodist in Dunbar for more than 20 years.  Betty was a reliable Christian and would go out of her way to help people.

Betty loved the coast of North Carolina where she and Jerry built a vacation home on Oak Island. They also loved to take organized bus tours around the country after retirement.  The "big" one was a nearly 2 week trek to the west coast and back to West Virginia. Betty and Jerry also enjoyed visiting Branson and Dollywood.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Herbert Cleo Hickman and Esta Balch Hickman Wood; step-father, Kenneth Wood; and Brother Elben E. Hickman.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Jerry Wood Carney of Dunbar; Son, Lance (Kathy Young) Carney of Scott Depot; Daughter, Lisa B. Carney of Dunbar; Grandchildren, Ryan H. Carney of Scott Depot/Starkville, MS and Jillian P. Carney of Scott Depot/Glendale, CA.; nephew, Michael Hickman of Dunbar.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 14 at Dunbar United Methodist Church, 1401 Myers Ave, Dunbar.  Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

Visitation will be Friday evening at Dunbar United Methodist Church from 6 to 8 p.m.
