Obituary

Betty Lee Murry Steward, 76, of Dunbar, was carried by angels to her heavenly home on April 26, 2022.

She was born the third of seven children to the late Robert H. and Ernestine Murry on February 7, 1946, in London, WV.

Betty attended public schools in Kanawha County. Upon graduating from Cedar Grove High School, she pursued her professional career in several employments where she is remembered as a conscientious employee who took great pride in her work. Betty retired in 2010 from the Energy Corporation of America.

She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the First Baptist Church of London in London, WV. Her heart remained at her beloved home church; however, she became a member of Ferguson Memorial Baptist Church in Dunbar where she served on the Usher Board.

Betty was married to Lester T. Steward for nearly 30 years. Together they enjoyed family, traveling, golfing, fishing, vacationing at the beach, and any number of outdoor activities.

She regularly attended the Dunbar Senior Center where she enjoyed time with friends. She also held her lifelong friends dear and enjoyed going to plays and concerts with them.

Small in stature, Betty was a petite woman with a giant capacity to give and love. She was a quiet person who was satisfied to sit in the background and serve those in need. Whether it be friends needing transportation to the doctor, or a youngster needing a new suit for church, she gave generously and without hesitation.

Betty's fondest moments were time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she visited regularly. She taught them to cook family recipes and loved to play board games with them. They doted on her with hugs, kisses, and brushing her hair. Friends will remember her infectious smile and her gentle grace.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Julia Lee and husband Eldridge and Joyce Smith; and brother, Robert Murry and his wife Faye.

Left to carry on her legacy are husband, Lester Steward; son, W. Keith Washington (Darlene); daughter, Stephanie Jackson (Kevin); sister, Gail Lewis; brothers, William Murry (Ava) and Edward Murry (Paula); her beloved cousin, Anthony Jackson; aunt, Phyllis Evans; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Monday, May 2, at Ferguson Baptist Church, Dunbar with the Rt. Rev. Dr. Emanuel A. Heyliger and Dr. Kevin Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Friends may visit one hour prior to the service at the church.

Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
