Betty (Hensley) Tyson

Betty (Hensley) Tyson, 87, of Nitro, WV, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2026, surrounded by her loving family,

Born August 1, 1939 in Charleston, WV, she was daughter of the late Harold and Louise (Fulknier) Hensley. A 1957 graduate of Nitro High School and marrying shortly after; Betty built a beautiful life centered around her family. She was married to the late Charles “Steve” Tyson, with whom she shared 68 years of marriage.

Betty was the embodiment of many roles; a loving mother, a caregiver to many family members, the center organizer and THE one to get everything done. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her proudest achievement and her greatest joy in life. She poured her heart and hard work into her Nitro home and their second home and farm in Wirt county. An avid historian at heart, Betty possessed a deep passion for genealogy. She spent countless hours researching family branches on both the Hensley and Tyson sides; tracing the roots preserving the legacies of the generations that came before her. She served as the Regent of the Vandalia Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a diehard fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers and the flying "WV". Her gentle spirit, unwavering support, infectious smile, and not to mention her tireless work ethic, left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles “Steve” Tyson, her oldest son, Mark Stephen Tyson; sisters, Doris (Hensley) Berthet and Barbara (Hensley) Tyson Edmonds, her aunts, and her parents.

She is survived by her loving sons, daughter and their spouses, Charles Edward (Lori), Eric Lee (Alecia), and daughter Julia Anne and Cheryl, Cindy Tyson (Mark Stephen); 7 grandchildren; Matthew Eric Tyson, Ashley Nicole Andrews (Jonathan), Brandon Ross Tyson (Laura), Angie Lee Carter (Randy), Michael Farrell (Stephanie), Nicholas Farrell (Kayla), and Megan Farrell; 13 great-grandchildren, Courtney and Jessica Lee, Gavin, Maddox and Lilly Farrell, Camden and Aurora Farrell, twins, Peyton and Colton Andrews, Brooklyn and Cole Tyson, Aleera and Storm Tyson.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate her beautiful life on Friday, August 21, at 1:00 p.m. at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar. Burial will follow the funeral service in the Donel C. Kinnard Veterans Cemetery at 130 Academy Drive, Dunbar, WV.
