Obituary

Bjarni John Carter, 68, our Viking Warrior, went home to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with cancer.  Surrounded by loved ones, he passed away peacefully at Hubbard Hospice House on Friday, June 28, 2024.

John was a proud South Charleston High School Black Eagle graduating in 1974.  He retired after 40 years of service with General Services at the State Capitol.  John started boxing at the age of 14, where he earned many titles and trophies over the years, at one time he was ranked 4th in the nation. He won two Golden Gloves titles, including being the youngest to win a Golden Gloves championship, many AAU state titles, along with the Rocky Marciano most aggressive award just to name a few.

If you knew John, then you knew how proud he was of his Icelandic heritage which was why he loved the series "The Vikings".   He was also a lifelong Elvis fan, and had a passion for riding his Harleys which he rode several times a week

He was a Christian whose faith was very strong and unwavering, especially through his battle.  He never had a "why me" attitude, and just knew he had to fight.  John remained very stoic through it all.

John always had a smile and a hug for his many friends no matter what their status was in life.
He was an inspiration to so many people, as they witnessed his strength, and determined spirit.  John was humbled by all the love, prayers, and support from everyone.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Gudbjorg Burgess;  and grandparents, Bjarni Sigurdsson and Svanhit Svala Kristbjornsdottir.

Bjarni John is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Tammy; daughter, Alyssa; grandchildren, Preston and Marissa; and his parakeet, Tootie.  He is also survived by his sisters, Debora Carter, Sandra Martinez (Andrew), Sue Laughlin (Mark), Robin Kelly (Brian), Cozetta Kelly (Roger); one brother, CB Burgess; along with many nieces, nephews, and family members in Iceland.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 19 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar with the Pastor Kent Estep officiating.
