Obituary

Calvin Ray Copning (Mitchell) born in Montgomery, West Virginia on April 21, 1957 to the late Chestner Copning (Allen) and George Mitchell, Jr., passed after battling a long illness on October 30, 2025.

He attended Montgomery Grade School where he later graduated from East Bank High School.  Calvin became the top cook for Waybright Enterprise at the cafeteria at the West Virginia State Capital.  He was an Army Veteran who proudly served our country who later developed a career in plumbing and served as President of the Tenant Council for Jarrett Terrace.  At the age of 14 years old, he was escorted by Dick Clark to perform on the American Bandstand Show and performed so tremendously it was talked about for years.  Calvin will be remembered as a people person who always shared and care for people.  He transported homeless people from shelters to teach Bible lessons and also ministered to them in South Carolina.  Calvin enjoyed being around his family members and special friends in Ohio, Wayne and Janich Hall in South Carolina.

Calvin is preceded in death by grandfathers, William L. Copning and George Calvin Mitchell, Sr.; grandmothers, Mary Bell Copning and Martha A. Mitchell; brothers, Danny L. Copning, Michael S. Copning, George C. Copening, and Norris E. Copning; sisters, Joan L. Copning, Chestener Copning, Ramona J. Copning, and Clarice Copning; along with cousins, aunts, and uncles who have recently passed.

Left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Linda Copning, Martha Mitchell, and Felica Mitchell; brothers, Ben Green, Calvin Green, and George Mitchell; daughters, Latisha Dixon, Natasha Copning, Tony Copning, Calvin Copning, and Michael Copning; 24 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-neices, great-nephews, and numerous cousins.

A funeral will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 14, 2025 at New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Linda Duncan  officiating.

Family will welcome visitors one hour prior to the service at the church.
