Carl A. Burford, 82, of Winfield departed this life Monday, July 3, 2006 at CAMC Memorial Division.
He was born June 28, 1924 in Charleston, WV, son of the late Carl A. and Dorothy Fay Fisher Burford.
He retired from the Charleston Fire Department after 21 years of service. After his retirement, he worked for many years at Keller Funeral Home in Dunbar. He also operated the Burford Parking Lot on the corner of Virginia and Court Streets in downtown Charleston for many years. He was a member of Dunbar First Baptist Church having served on the Trustee Board. He was also a member of the Retired Fireman and Policemen's Association. Carl was very proud to have served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, having served 23 months in the South Pacific. He was a 28 year resident of Winfield and severed on several town committees including the Town Council. He was avid sports fan who particularly loved baseball and the St. Louis Cardinals and was a supporter of local youth sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents and bothers Ronald D. and James D. Burford.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years Lola Postle Burford, Daughter and son and law Beverly K. and Charles R. Erwin of Winfield, two grandsons, C. Douglas Erwin and wife Julie of Winfield, and Timothy S. Erwin and wife Jennifer of Beckley and two great granddaughters Mary Lauren Erwin of Beckley and Madeline Camille Erwin of Winfield.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 6, 2006 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar. Entombment will be in Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
