Carol Jane Long

CAROL JANE (GARTEN) LONG, 72, of Nitro, WV, formerly South Charleston, passed away July 5, 2026, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, after a long illness.

Carol was a compassionate and dedicated healthcare professional whose work was not simply a career—it was a calling. Throughout her many years in healthcare, she worked at several hospitals and doctor’s offices, performing EKGs and Echocardiograms, bringing skill, kindness, and genuine concern to every patient she cared for. Her dedication touched countless lives.

Carol truly loved her work because she loved helping people. She loved her patients, and she cherished and respected the colleagues who became an important part of her life. Over the years, she formed many meaningful friendships with coworkers, physicians, patients, and families. She treated people with patience, dignity, and compassion, often offering a reassuring smile, a kind word or even a humorous anecdote when they needed it most. She had a special ability to make people feel comfortable, cared for, and valued and her sense of humor was legendary. Carol will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She was predeceased by her father, William H. Garten Jr., and mother, Margaret F. Garten, of South Charleston, WV; brother, Christopher A. Garten of Marietta, Ohio; sisters, Mary Kay Garten, of South Charleston, WV, and Rebecca A. "Peachy" Garten, of South Charleston, WV.

Surviving Carol is her sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Randy Bowles of Southbury, CT; nephew, Philip Bowles of Southbury, CT; niece, Laura Bowles Diana, husband Chris Diana, and great nephew, Lucas Diana, all of Fairfield, CT; as well as many relatives.

She leaves behind not only the love of her family and friends, but also the gratitude and memories of the many people whose lives she touched through her work. Her kindness, dedication, and love for those she cared for will not be forgotten.

Our family would like to express their deepest gratitude to two special friends, Rosie Long and Tom Washington, and a special cousin, Susie Wiersteiner Lowery, whose unwavering kindness and compassion meant so much. During Carol’s long illness, they all stood faithfully by her side, offering support with countless acts of care when it was needed most. We will always be grateful for the peace of mind, loyalty, and selfless friendship they shared with Carol.

With honor and respect for her wishes, there was no service or visitation.
