Obituary

Carol Evelyn Shaffer Fields Burgess was called home by the Lord in the late evening hours of September 25, 2023 in Charleston.

Carol was born January 12, 1944, in Sissonville, on a frosty cold Friday, to the late Harold and Mabel Harper Shaffer.

She was the younger of two girls, her older sister and best friend was Violet. Carol was one of seven children.

Carol was predeceased in death by her siblings, Junior Shaffer, Shelby Shaffer, Doyle Shaffer, Violet Fields, and Larry Shaffer; nephews, Donald and Ronald; and niece, Missy.

Carol is survived by nieces and nephews, Tim, Harold, Benita, Anita, Donnie, John, Brent and Rachel, along with several great nieces and nephews; dear friend and caregiver, Sam Price; and many friends.

Both Shaffer girls married Fields boys, also being brothers. Otmer Harold Fields to Carol Shaffer, and Raymond Fields to Violet Shaffer.

After Carol's first husband Harold passed, the Lord saw fit to reconnect her with childhood friend and second husband, Donald Burgess. It was common to hear her beautiful voice accompany Donald on his guitar where they both sang, whether at church or at community events. Their voices rang clear praising Jesus while singing traditional gospel hymns.

Being one of the younger children in the family, Carol, with her beautiful smile, was an easy best friend who would listen, and offer words of wisdom. Although Carol lived without children of her own, she deeply loved all of her nieces and nephews.

The country girl Carol eventually came to the big city of Charleston, where she lived life to to the fullest, always finding new friends along the way. Carol enjoyed most of all laughing, going to the thrift stores in search of a bargains, collecting angels, and attending church at Parson's Chapel.

Go rest "High on that Mountain" Carol, we will always remember your beautiful voice humming and singing, ever so sweetly.

Say not in grief, "she is no more" but in thankfulness that "she was."

Until we meet again, you are our angel now, watching over us.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 3, in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
