Carol Mozell Spencer passed away on Sunday, June 4 2023 in Charleston, WV, while under hospice care after a long illness.
She was born on June 25, 1948, in Williamsburg, Virginia to the lateThomas Oliver Taylor and Virgie Luana Taylor. Carol was the youngest daughter of the family raised in Tazewell County, Virginia, and West Dunbar, West Virginia.
Carol received her education in the Dunbar school system and graduated from Dunbar High School in 1965. She attended West Virginia State College, and was an honorary West Virginia State University Athletics Association member. Carol was the first African American female pipe fitter at the Union Carbide Technical Center, and worked there for 25 years before retiring in June 2000.
A lifelong servant of Christ, Carol attended the Institute Church of the Nazarene. She served on the pastoral care committee, and as an usher.
Carol enjoyed her family, gardening, community service, traveling, and playing in the Union Carbide Softball league. She was an avid Cleveland Browns fan. A woman of strong faith and values, she had a beautiful personality and an infectious sense of humor. She was the family rock and matriarch.
In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters; Ardelle Harris, Arita Harris, Vicie Harris, Roscoe Harris, Rosa Brooks, Myrtle Motley, and Henry Harris.
She leaves to cherish her memory; sister, Linda Hamilton (Dave); daughter, Elizabeth Cotton (Tim); grandchildren, Mariea Anjouney Alston (Tyrell), Gregory Jerome Cotton II; "special sons", Dwight Robinson (Monica) and Reginald Scott; special friends, Terry and Melissa Hamrick, JW and Betty Spencer, and Dorothy Setzer; and a host of nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 11 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar. Burial will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.
Friends may visit two hours prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Institute Church of the Nazarene, 212 Washington Avenue, Institute, WV 25112.
Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
