Obituary

Catherine Elizabeth Bennett, 88, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.

She was born on February 28, 1937, in Beckley, to William Welsh and Frances Welsh. Her father passed away when Catherine was just three months old. Her mother later married John Beaver, the man who became the only father Catherine ever knew.

Catherine is survived by her son, John E. Bennett Jr.; her grandchildren, Andrew Bennett and wife Jana, and Leigh Anna Bennett; and her great-grandchildren, Lyla-Scott Bennett, and Lainey-Mae Bennett. She is also survived by her sister, Rebecca Mills; and her brother, John Beaver.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Sarah Beaver; and her husband of 63 years, John E. Bennett, whom she married on May 31, 1956.

Catherine was a proud graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She went on to earn her undergraduate degree from the University of Charleston and later completed her master's degree at Duke University. She began her career as a longtime biology teacher at Dunbar High School before moving into administration. She ultimately retired as a principal of Andrew Jackson Middle School, where she touched countless lives with her leadership, compassion, and commitment to students.

Per her wishes, there will be no service or visitation. The family expresses deep gratitude to the staff of Hubbard Hospice House for their exceptional care. Those wishing to honor Catherine may consider a memorial contribution to Hubbard Hospice House at 1001 Curtis Price Way, Charleston, WV 25311.

Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
