Charles "Chuck" Edward Bowling, 72, of Dunbar, passed away at his home on Sunday, August 21, 2016.
He grew up on Charleston's West Side where he attended Stonewall Jackson High School and was a member of the class of 1961. Following high school he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was a Veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served as a mechanic in the F-4 Phantom Air Wing from 1961 until 1970. Charles was involved in the Knights of Columbus and a parishioner of both St. Francis in St. Albans and St. Anthony's Parish & School on Charleston's West Side. He proudly served as an Envoy of Beta Sigma Phi International Women' Sorority – Preceptor Alpha Chapter of Charleston City Counsel where his wife remains an active member. He made a career and retired in 1994 from the E. I. DuPont Plant in Belle. Charles briefly lived in both Charlotte, NC and Rock Hill, SC until returning to Dunbar in 1999 where he resided until his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack E. Bowling and Wilma R. Wright; sister, Peggy Carnes of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and brother, Jackie Bowling of Charleston.
Charles is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Charlotte Ann Bowling (Long) of Dunbar; his son Charles "Chaz" E. Bowling and his husband, Gregory M. Lusk, of Alpharetta, Ga.; siblings, Barbara Claar of Lawrenceville, Ga, Wilma Atherton of Longmont, Colo., Richard Bowling and John Bowling of Rosedale, Donald Bowling and Mary Famligletti of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and all their spouses and children.
A memorial service with full military honors will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 9 at Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veteran's Cemetery in Dunbar, with Pastor Terry L. Stone officiating. A procession will be leaving Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, at 1:30 p.m.
