Charles Harold Coon, 92, previously of Dunbar, passed away at Falls River Village Assisted Living in Raleigh, N.C., on June 25, 2016.
"Charlie," as he was affectionately known by family and friends, will always be remembered for his kindness and willingness to help with gardening, yard work, and repairs of any kind. Early in his retirement, he also loved golfing with his buddies Junior, Clem, and Bill.
He was a World War II Army veteran, having served for three years in both the United States and Cairo, Egypt. He retired in 1986 from Sears Service Department with 35 years of service, and relocated to Raleigh, N.C. in 2012, where he had the joy of spending time with his grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene Glenn Coon, in 2014; parents, Moses and Corda Coon; and siblings, Olive Marie Coon, Joe Coon, Darrel Coon, Kathleen Coon, Irene Cobb, and granddaughter, Lindsay Marie Townsend.
Surviving are daughters, Linda Garrett of Raleigh, N.C., Lisa Townsend (Ron) of Wilmington, N.C.; sisters, Maxine Braley of Dunbar and Mary Nutter (Fred) of Evans; brother, Carroll Coon (Goldie) of Fairplain; sister-in-law, Geneva Coon of Massillon, Ohio; grandchildren, Zachary Townsend (Kristin) of Raleigh, N.C.; Nicole Hatcher Fowler (Kenny) of Raleigh, N.C.; Meredith Hatcher Taylor (Brandon) of Wake Forest, N.C.; and great granddaughters, Addison Lynn Taylor of Wake Forest, N.C. and Quinn Marie Fowler of Raleigh, N.C.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 1, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar with the Rev. Joel Harpold officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
