Obituary

Charles "Charlie" P. Gardner, age 86, went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 7, 2015 in Jacksonville, NC.

He passed peacefully at home with his loved ones by his side; wife Gloria J., and daughters; Kathy Ross and Charlene Nichols.

He was born on March 26, 1929 in Dunbar to Nile M. and Mantie Mae (Pierson) Gardner.

Charlie graduated from Dunbar High School and attended WVU. As a PFC in the Korean War, he was wounded in action and received a Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Camp Stars and a United Nations Service Medal. He enjoyed a long career in sales.

Charlie was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather and brother. Always the gentleman, Charlie had an easy smile and kind manner. His greatest attributes were his optimism and his ability to see the best in others. Charlie was well known for his wonderful sense of humor, quick wit and story-telling ability. He never met a person he didn't like and was dearly loved by all those fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gloria; his daughters, Kathy Ross and Charlene Nichols; three granddaughters, Erin Ross, Fallon Ross and Kelsey Ross; brother, David N. Gardner; nieces, Cindy Barr, Michele Green and Cara Beasley; nephews, Ted Gillette, Jim Gillette; many cousins and other loved family members.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m., on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Dunbar United Methodist Church, 1401 Myers Ave., Dunbar. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Okey Harless officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Woodmere Memorial Park, 2701 Washington Blvd, Huntington.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Dunbar United Methodist Church Endowment Fund in memory of Charles Gardner.
