Charles Lee Payne, 73, of Charleston, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

He was born on October 4, 1950 in Charleston, to the late Gilbert and Nettie Belle Payne.

Charles was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was always helping others and never met a stranger. He was well loved and will be deeply missed.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Dewey Lee Payne; and sister-in-law, Ruth Payne.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Mary Beth Payne; siblings, Della Steele and husband Kenneth of North Carolina, Wanda Shouldis and husband Gary of Gay, Dinah Parsons and husband Edison of Ripley, Keith Payne and wife Lori Beth of Dunbar, Judy Payne and husband Glen Aaron of Charleston; Little Joe the cat; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Eric Shouldis and CAMC Memorial staff for their loving and compassionate care.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 8, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Rev. Tom Moore officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Friends may visit one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, 1248 Greenbrier Street, Charleston, WV 25311.
