Charles "Tom" Rent died Sunday morning, February 10, 2008 at his home in Braxton County of a heart attack.
Tom's eccentric outlook on life and great love for drag racing, his animals and close friends led to a wonderful and event filled life. When everyone in the 60's talked about moving to California for fame and fortune – Tom did it and moved to L. A., earning him the nickname "California Tommy."
Tom served in the US Air Force as an Airman Third Class from 1962-1964. He was an original member of the Stockers Car Club in St. Albans. Tom worked for Jim Minnick Racing in 1967 as a precision engine balancer. He was at the original Winfield Drag Strip on opening day and had recently worked at the Kanawha Valley Dragway in Mason County. He was the owner/operator of the infamous Buggy Shop in Dunbar in the late 60's and 70's.
Tom was a certified SEMA Top Fuel chassis fabricator that spanned over 2 decades and led to him being crew member and associated with Clayton Harris, Alan Starr, Richard Holcomb, Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse," Bob Franklin's "Wild Thing," Prestige Gunite Express, Simpson, Brotherton and Thrift Top Fuel Dragster, Hundley & Boggs, "Hoot" Al Baldwin, Don Casto, Herb Parks and "Big Daddy" Don Garlits.
Tom's chassis work for Richard Holcolm put him in the prestigious 4 second club in Top Fuel.
Tom also built his famous bi-plane aircraft under the name of Trent Aircraft Co.
His love for the outdoors kept him in Braxton County at his cabin and farm for over 25 years.
Tom is survived by one daughter, one son and 4 grandchildren in WV. Also one sister and one niece in Kansas. He is also survived by more friends than can be listed.
A memorial service for the celebration of Tom's life will be held at 8 p.m., Thursday, February 21, 2008 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Joel Harpold officiating.
Friends may gather from 6 to 8 p.m. prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
