Stephen Tyson
November 29, 1932 – February 3, 2026
Charles Stephen "Steve" Tyson died at home after a long illness on February 3, 2026.
Steve was born at Spencer, on November 29, 1932, and was the son of Hobart and Imogene (Epling) Tyson.
After moving to Nitro in 1943, Steve graduated from Nitro High School in 1952 and was inducted into the Army during the Korean War serving after training in the 536th MP Co. Germany.
Upon completion of his military service in 1955, Steve was employed by Union Carbide and after 38 years retired in 1993. Steve enjoyed his employment and had many interesting job assignments including a short stint in India. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed many years of hunting, deep sea fishing, gardening and planting trees on his farms in Roane and Wirt counties. He was especially pleased that he could plant many varieties of trees including 2300 bald cypress on his farm in Wirt County and through the years planted around 5000 trees of various species. Even though a stroke in 2004 left him with limited movement, he continued to plant seeds and nuts to start his own trees which he transplanted to his farm, Cypress Cove, in Wirt Co.
Steve is survived by the love of his life, Betty, his wife of 68 years; and sons and spouses, Charles Edward and Lori, Eric Lee and Alecia, and daughter, Julia Anne and Cheryl, Cindy Tyson, wife of Mark Stephen; grandsons, Matthew Eric Tyson and wife, Jordan, Brandon Ross Tyson and wife Laura; granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Tyson and husband, Jonathan Andrews; great-grandchildren, twins, Colton and Peyton Andrews, Brooklyn, Aleera, Cole and Storm Tyson; step-grandchildren, Michael Farrell and wife, Stephanie, Nicholas Farrell and wife, Kayla, Megan Farrell, Angie Lee Carter and husband Randy Carter; step-great-granddaughters, Courtney and Jessica Lee, Lily and Arora Farrell; step-great-grandsons, Gavin, Maddox, and Camden Farrell.
Also surviving are brother-in-law, Paul Gatens; and special first cousin, Paul Epling and wife, Patty, with whom he jointly had a hunting camp for many years; and several nieces and nephews.
Steve was predeceased by his eldest son, Mark Stephen; grand daughter, Stephanie Lynn Tyson; his parents; brother, Robert (Bob); sisters, Diane Endricks and Kathy Gatens; his parents-in-law, Harrold and Louise Hensley; brothers-in-law, Buddy Endricks and Roland Berthet; sisters-in-law, Barbara (Hensley) Tyson Edmonds, and Doris (Hensley) Lance Berthet.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 9, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar. Burial will follow in Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar.
Friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
