Chaten
Nelson
October 10, 1977 – November 10, 2023
Chaten Nelson, 46, died tragically in a car accident on November 10, 2023 in the early morning.
He was born and raised in Rand, WV to the late Herbert and Patricia Boyd Nelson, and was proud of where he came from.
Chaten was a man of many hats. He was very proud to have been a wrestler in high school. He served in the Navy. Chaten had earned a degree in counseling, and was was a very good counselor. He succeeded in just about everything he put his mind to, but Chaten's heart was always in construction. After attending college again, he became a general contractor, forming his own business which he named Rebuilt Construction. Chaten was a perfectionist. He never wanted his work to be mediocre, and that was reflected in all of the houses he worked in and on.
He loved horror movies, watching UFC on Saturdays, and coffee was a necessity. Chaten loved music, and performed nightly shower concerts.
He also loved being with his family and spending time with his few close friends. Chaten was always available to help anyone in need; whether it be to find them a treatment center, donate food or money, or to pay bills anonymously. He was just a phone call away. It didn't matter, he just wanted to make a difference. Chaten was truly grateful for his life and it was the life he himself created. He was brave, and always encouraged people to "walk through the fear".
In June, Chaten had celebrated eight years of sobriety. He came from nowhere, was told he would be nothing, and proved all those people wrong. He lived life to the fullest, and he never gave up. Chaten was positive and you always knew when he was around.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved Uncle Lenny whom he spoke of often; and his best friend and father-in-law, Robert Morris.
Chaten is survived by his wife, Layla; their two children, Jasmine and Josie; mother-in-law, Sherie (Pearl) Morris, who was also one of his best friends; best buddy, Loki; and several cousins, but Chaten was especially close with his cousin, Brandon, who survived the car accident.
He had many friends and employees, but his employees were not just employees, Chaten truly loved and cared for them. He also loved his Narcotics Anonymous family, as well as all the friends he made along the way at Captain D's, Teays Valley Hospital, and of course anyone in construction. Chaten didn't know a stranger.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar with Rev. Greg Hudson officiating.
Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
