Cheryl Yvonne
Courts
March 14, 1962 – December 27, 2024
Cheryl Yvonne Courts, 62, passed away quietly on December 27, 2024.
Born on March 14, 1962, Cheryl was the oldest of five children. She graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School, class of 1980, and began working for Smith Transfer Corp. in Belle, WV as a dispatcher.
She was later employed by the United States Postal Service where she worked a full-time position in the Processing & Distribution Center. During her employment, Cheryl was a member of the postal bowling league and also participated in softball and basketball until her retirement.
Cheryl enjoyed watching football during her leisure time. Anyone who knew her knew she was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. While she was talented at interior decorating, Cheryl was very meticulous when it came to cleaning and organization and was well-known for her immaculate housekeeping mannerisms (her sisters would call it OCD).
God played a huge role in Cheryl's foundational and religious beliefs. Growing up and attending the Glorious Church Of God In Christ, Wertz Avenue, Cheryl was baptized at a young age and a member of the choir. She had a gift at making the tambourine sing. Years later, she also attended First Baptist Church of Charleston where she volunteered as a server and greeter.
She had a giving heart and often donated to Saint Jude and The Ronald McDonald House Charities. Cheryl was a devoted mother, godmother and friend who dedicated most of her life to the caretaking of her mother and son. Her smile, laughter and warm embrace will be deeply missed.
She was preceded in death by her father, Earl Cochran Jr., mother, Carolyn Lee Cochran, and son, Lil Bra Cochran. She leaves behind to cherish her memory daughter, Chequela (Chris) Gaines; son, James Courts II; grandson, Gage Gaines; granddaughter, Israelle (Izzy) Gaines; godson, Sean Brown; sisters, Theresa (Charles) Whitehead, Earlene Cochran, Carolyn (Renee) Cochran; brother, Michael Brown, and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar with the Reverend Patrick Hairston officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.
Family will welcome visitors one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
