Clara Jean Burks, aka Burkie, 84, of South Charleston, passed away on February 25, 2018.

Affectionately known as Mother Burks, she was a faithful servant at Greater Emanuel Apostolic Church where she served on various ministries including The Hope Chest and Usher Board Mission. She was also a Sunday school teacher and missionary. She was employed at Thomas Memorial Hospital as an LPN for more than 20 years.

She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Close; mother, Helena Close; sister, Jennifer Cole; and son, Curtis Melvin Burks, Jr.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Denise Womack; brothers, Charles Close and Lonnie Close; and sisters, Cleo Brown and Gertie Taylor.

The family would like to thank the skilled nursing staff at Saint Francis Hospital and the MICU at CAMC Memorial for all the love and support provided to our beloved family member.

Services will be held at noon on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Mount Zion Baptist Church 442 McDonald Avenue, South Charleston, WV 25309 with Bishop Norman Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service from 11 a.m. to noon at Mount Zion Baptist Church.
