Daniel L. Carey, 74, of Charleston, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2018, after a long illness.

He was born on February 19, 1944, in Norfolk, VA.

Dan was a graduate of West Virginia State College with a Master's Degree in Mathematics. He retired from Bayer in 2004 after 37 years. He joined the U.S. Navy in October of 1962 and retired in August of 2001.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Carey; and his mother, Arbutus Carey Higginbotham.

Dan is survived by his wife of 29 years, Betty Carey; sons, Joey Carey (Ebony) of Charleston and Shawn Hartleroad (Laura) of Charleston; daughter, Sandy Day (John) of Cross Lanes; sister, Elizabeth Dempsey of St. Albans; brothers, Jim Carey (Peggy) of Hurricane, Pat Carey (Sharon) of Hurricane, Rex Carey (Bobbi) of Hurricane; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Reverend Lou Bender officiating. Burial will follow in Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
