Obituary

Darrell Lee Wingett, 78, a lifelong resident of Dunbar, WV passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2026 at WVU Thomas Health.  He fought a courageous three year battle against cancer before entering the gates of Heaven.

Born on November 9, 1947, Darrell was the proud son of the late Clifford O. Wingett and V. Louise Lovejoy Wingett.

Darrell was a 1966 graduate of Dunbar High School where he completed certification of maintenance mechanics and welding.  He was also a member of the Boiler Makers Union.

He started working at the young age of twelve setting pins at the Dunbar bowling alley and was paid two hot dogs, a coke, and a game of bowling.  That was when his love for bowling was born.  He participated in many blowing tournaments both locally and out of state.

Darrell was a welder by trade and worked at Southwestern Engineering until they relocated to Joplin, Missouri.  From there he was hired at Vandalia Terrace Apartments for eleven years before joining the staff as maintenance manager of Charleston Arbors.  When COVID hit, he decided to retire in early 2020.

He was an avid fan of WVU Mountaineer football, the Seattle Seahawks, and college football.  He would watch Marshall if WVU did not have a game that day.

Darrell was a young Christian who attended Spring Hill Baptist in South Charleston.  He enjoyed meeting people, and sharing stories some funny, some sad.  He loved to take his metal detector on the beach to see what treasures he could find.  Darrell was also an avid hunter, and when he had down time liked to watch TV westerns.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents; his brother Jerry, and his sister, Patty Wingett, all of Dunbar.

Darrell is survived by his wife of 52 years and three days, Carol Danbury Wingett;  his son, Clifford (Devona); his grandson, Ayden and granddaughter, Hailey, all of Fraziers Bottom; his sister, Janet Snyder of Dunbar; along with many beloved nieces and nephews.

The family would like to say a 'special thanks' to Dr. Lindsey Stull and Dr. Justin Cohen, both oncologists, from their compassion and wonderful care.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at Spring Hill Baptist Church:  4707 Ohio St, South Charleston, WV (across from Thomas Hospital).

Family will welcome visitors one hour prior to the Celebration of Life at the church.

Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
