Delores Jean
Atkins
May 16, 1935 – April 13, 2024
Delores Jean Atkins, 88, of Athens, Alabama was born May 16, 1935, and passed away on April 13, 2024, at home following a long struggle with Alzheimer's and a recent fall.
She was previously a long-time resident of West Virginia for 83 years and always considered West Virginia as home. She retired from Charleston Dept. Store and loved to tell stories of her work there.
A member of the Church of Christ for 70+ years, Delores' obedience to the gospel of Christ set a direction for her family that influenced many to obey the Lord. Even when many of her memories faded, the zeal to attend worship services was deeply engrained and influenced her faithful attendance until shortly before her passing.
She loved her family and was devoted to caring for them. In return, she was loved and will be missed by her family, friends, and fellow Christians. She was an excellent cook that enjoyed family get-togethers. She was also known for her hospitality in providing for visiting preachers and their families.
Preceding her in death were her father, Carl F. Newhouse; mother, Helen Marie (Hicks) Newhouse; and husband, James F. Atkins.
Surviving are her daughters, Diane Fields (Jimmy) of Century, FL, Joyce Anderson (Denny) of Athens, AL, and Janet Gibson (John) of Athens, AL; two brothers, Carl E. Newhouse (Carol) of Charleston, WV and Robert Newhouse (Shirley) of Charleston, WV; eight grandchildren, Lisa Sullivan, Jimmy Fields, Jr., Michael Fields, Keri Rice, Brian Anderson, Derek Anderson, Amanda Smith, and Jesse Gibson; 24 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great granddaughter; brother-in law, Paul Wells (Connie); several nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; along with many brothers and sisters in Christ, and friends who've known her for years.
A funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2024 with burial to follow in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar with her son-in-law John Gibson officiating assisted by sons-in-law Jimmy Fields and Denny Anderson.
Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
