Obituary

Denise Adrienne Conner was born on June 8, 1935 in Charleston West Virginia to the late Paris Conner and Nokomis Giles.  She was the youngest of two daughters born to this union.  She was prodded in death by her beloved older sister, JoAnne, and her only son, DaRhon.

Denise was educated in the public schools of Charleston's historic West Side, attending Dunbar Elementary, Cabell Junior High, and Garnet High School, where she graduated with honors.  A vibrant and accomplished student, she proudly served as head majorette of Garnet High School Band, demonstrating early the grace, leadership, and excellence that would define her life.  She continued her education at West Virginia State College, earning a Bachelor's degree in Biology with minors in Mathematics and German.  While in college, Denise became a devoted member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and was inducted into Delta Phi Alpha, the National German Honor Society, reflecting her academic excellence and commitment to scholarship.

Denise began her distinguished teaching career with the Detroit Public Schools, where she faithfully served for more than 38 years as an Elementary Science Teacher.  Her passion for education and unwavering dedication to her students left a lasting impact on countless young lives.  In 1992, her peers honored her at the Booker T. Washington Businessmen's Association Luncheon for Outstanding and Dedicated Service, a testament to her excellence and commitment to her profession.

A woman of deep faith and service, Denise supported numerous charitable organizations.  She volunteered her time at the Karmanos Cancer Institute, was a devoted member of Sacred Heart, and proudly maintained life membership in the NAACP.

Denise embraced life with joy and enthusiasm.  She was a world traveler who found joy in visiting Athens and cruising the beautiful Aegean Seas.  Closer to home, she loved attending gatherings and celebrations, where she could often be found on the dance floor.  Denise especially enjoyed dancing at parties and spending lively afternoons at St. Patrick's Senior Center, where her energy, smile, and graceful moves brought joy to friends and fellow seniors alike.

Denise leaves to cherish her memory, her extended family, dear friends, former students, sorority sisters, church family, and all whose lives were touched by her wisdom, elegance, and unwavering spirit.  Her life was one of faith, scholarship, service, and love—a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
