Donald R. Mellert, 72, of Dunbar, passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2007, following a long illness.
The seventh son of a seventh son, Don was a retiree of Union Carbidewhere he was a dedicated employee for 38 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubbard and Stella Mellert; two brothers, Kenny and Bobby; two sisters, Katie and Vivian.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Donald S. and Risa of Goldtown; one daughter, Vicki of Charleston; and three grandsons, Matt and Andy Mellert, and Jace Miller. Don is also survived by four brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Lucy of Charleston, Gene and Patty of Dunbar, Hubbie and Frances of Dunbar, and Teet and Linda of Riverview, FL.
A graduate of Dunbar High School, Don excelled in both football and track. He played in the North-South football game and was recognized throughout the Kanawha Valley as a rising football star. He never gave up his love for Dunbar. He was a loving father and grandfather.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 31, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. James H. Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.
