Dorcas K. Burdette, 81, of Big Chimney, went to sleep in the Lord on Monday, April 18, 2016, at home after a short illness.
She fought a good fight, she kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for her a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give her at that day: and not to her only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. Her course is finished.
Dorcas was born in Sissonville on September 16, 1934 to Adam and Mary Young, both of whom preceded her in death along with her adoring husband of 51 years, Don Burdette. Also preceding her were her brothers, Lionel Young, Bill Young and Charlie Young; sisters, Willa Roach and JoAnn Asay.
Dorcas is survived by her son, Craig Burdette and Cookie of Big Chimney; her daughter , Stephanie Burcham and her husband, Dovel , who was like a son, of Big Chimney; three grandsons, Tyler Burdette, Zach Burdette (Kate) and Aaron Burcham; two granddaughters, Brittany Huffman (Jason) and A'sa Burcham; and one great grandson, William Huffman; brother, James Young (Connie) of Charleston: sister, Wanda Oxley (Bob) of Columbus, OH; sister in law, Reva Wills of Big Chimney ; brother in law, Clinton Burdette (Jo) of Red House; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends that she loved dearly.
Dorcas graduated from Dunbar High in 1952. She was a devoted wife and mother and was never prouder than when the grandchildren started arriving. She often said you just don't understand until you have grandchildren just how much you can love them. She always had a smile, a giggle and a kind word for everyone and never met a stranger. She loved to send cards and letters to brighten someone's day calling it her card ministry as well as countless calls just to check on people.
We found a poem in her paperwork that she wanted shared
Don't grieve for me when my work on earth is done, I could not stay another day to laugh, to love, to work or play, tasks left undone must stay that way, I've come to the end of this life's day, If my parting has left a void then fill it with remembered joy, a friendship shared, a laugh a kiss, oh yes when death takes us we have no remembrance of things we miss. Be not burdened with time of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life has been full, I've savored much. I love Jesus who saved my soul and my family and friends I've come to know.
She was loved dearly and will be sadly missed by her adoring family and countless friends whom she cherished.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 22, at the Clendenin Advent Christian Church with Pastor Michael Todorovich officiating. Burial will follow in Elk Hills Memorial Park.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
