Dorothy Marion Schwing was born on January 7, 1913, at Follensbee, WV. She died on January 19, 2012, at Moss' Golden Years Personal Care Home, Poca.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore C. Schwing and Harriett Elizabeth Jane Turner Schwing; sisters, Caroline S. Raines and Harriett S. Justice Mason.
Family members that will miss her are her nephew, Robert R. Raines and wife Judy; nieces, Harriett L. Brown and husband Gene A., of Pensacola, FL, Stanley "DeeDee" E. Heyne and husband Gary, of Aloha, OR; five grandnieces, two grandnephews, and 31 great and great – great grand nieces and nephews.
Dorothy attended high school in New Martinsville, WV and Dunbar where she graduated as Salutatorian of her class. She attended West Virginia Wesleyan College, and received Membership of the Emeritus Club; Morris Harvey College in Charleston (The University of Charleston), where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree; and Teacher's College of Columbia University in New York, NY, receiving her Master of Arts Degree.
Dorothy taught school in Kanawha County for 47 years. The first year she taught in a one-room school, the second year at Bonham Elementary School, and 45 years at Dunbar Elementary School. She was Dunbar Teacher of the Year two times, and Kanawha County Teacher of the Year in 1976.
Dorothy was also an active person in her community as a member, former organist, Sunday School Teacher, and Administrative Board Member of Humphreys U.M. Church. She was a member of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society Int'l and The Pioneer Woman's Club of Dunbar. She was a 50 year member of Dunbar Chapter #133, O.E.S., serving as an organist. She was also a member of the County, State, and National Retired School Employees' Association.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, January 23, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 24, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Doyle D. Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Spring Hill.
