Obituary

Drexel "Bear" Adkins, Jr., 57, of Charleston and formerly of Bartley, WV, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at his home following a long illness.

He was born April 20, 1955, at Holden Hospital, in Holden, the son of Sue Carol Mann Adkins of Whitman, WV and the late Drexel Adkins, Sr. Bear was a former Educator and Coach for many years for McDowell County Schools and taught at Big Creek High School where he also coached a variety of sports. Coach Bear and his staff lead the 1997 Big Creek High School Football Team to the state championship playoffs where they were first runner up. Prior to his retirement in 2010, he taught for Kanawha County Schools at various schools in the county. He was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, in War, before moving to Charleston and attended Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Kanawha City where he met wonderful Christian friends.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 36 years, Anita Tackett Adkins; son, Matthew Philip Adkins and his wife, Tara of Charleston; daughter, Adrienne Renae West and her husband, Matthew of Princeton, WV; sisters, Dana Adkins of Dunbar, Kimberly Kay and her husband, Dan of Cross Lanes; grandchildren, Michael and Andrew Adkins, Mason and Logan West; brothers-in-law, Troy Tackett and his wife, Ruth Ann of Sandusky, OH, Leon Tackett and his wife, Carol of War, Al Tackett and his wife, Jane of Orlando, FL; sister-in-law, Janice Harless of Bristol, TN.

Memorial Celebration services will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, August 21, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Pastor Martin West officiating.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.

An additional Memorial Celebration will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, August 23, at Calvary Baptist Church, War, with Pastor Bill Harmon officiating.

Friends may call 3 hours prior to the service at the church.

Friends are welcome to join in the ceremony at either location to help us celebrate the gift Bear was to all of us. Feel free to wear your green and white, if you are an OWL or an OWLS fan. Bear would love it as would his family.
