Obituary

Edgar Dwayne Phillips, 58, affectionately know as "Cheese" of Dunbar, West Virginia, transitioned from this life to eternal life on January 24, 2025 surrounded by his family and loved ones at Hubbard Hospice House.

He was the husband of Annette Harris Phillips.  Their journey of love and lifelong friendship began 40 years ago as teenagers.  They were united in marriage for 30 years.

Born in Charleston, WV, he was the son of the late James Nathaniel, Sr. and Joyce Ann Phillips.

Dwayne graduated from Dunbar High School in 1985, where he was a member of the last AA State Championship Basketball team at Dunbar High School.  He retired from Lowe's Home Improvement after 30 plus years of service.

He attended Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church with his family where he assisted his wife with the Youth Group, teaching Sunday School, and traveling to summer camp.  Dwayne enjoyed sports, particularly basketball.  He coached Dunbar Little League Football with five championships. Dwayne also coached basketball, baseball, and T-Ball.  He was a great husband, father, an role model to all those he engaged with including his many nieces and nephews.  Dwayne was a mentor and pillar throughout the community and one with whom anyone could talk.  He never met a stranger, and was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers Fan.

Edgar Dwayne "Cheese" Phillips was preceded in death by is father, James Nathaniel "Baby James" Phillips along with his sister, Bonita Star "Pebbles" Miller.

"Cheese" is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Annette Harris Phillips; son, Edgar James "EJ" Phillips; daughter, Lynnette Starr "Sissy" Phillips and soon to be first granddaughter, Leilani DeLaine Phillips; mother, Joyce Ann Phillips; brother, James Nathaniel "Jamie" Phillips, Jr. (Traci); and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.

We, the family, would like to express our deepest thanks for your kindness, support, and sympathy during this incredibly difficult time.  Your thoughtful gestures, whether through words, actions, or simply being there for us, have brought comfort and peace to our hearts.  The loss of our loved one has been overwhelming, but your presence has been a reminder that we are not alone on this journey.  We truly appreciate your compassion and will forever be grateful for your love and support.

The family would like to give a special "thank you" to the Cabell-Huntington Hospital Oncology and Radiation Department for making our journey a little easier.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2025 at Simpson Memorial Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Sharletta M. Green officiating.

The family will welcome visitors two hours prior to the service at the church.

Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
