Eleanor Ruth Higgins Swartz, 83, formerly of Nitro, died Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at Marmet Center after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
She was born in Parkersburg August 11, 1928 to the late Emery and Sadie Reed Higgins.
She attended Parkersburg and Dunbar schools, graduating from Dunbar High School in 1946. She was a lifelong learner, attending Marshall College, West Virginia State College, Morris Harvey College, and ultimately earning a master's degree from West Virginia University.
She was a schoolteacher who continued to substitute teach long after she retired from Mound School in Dunbar.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her siblings, Richard Higgins of Parkersburg and Margaret Bennett of Saint Albans, and niece, Eleanor Ruth Bennett Wade of Saint Albans.
She is survived by sons Gordon L. Swartz III of Cameron, Emery Swartz of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., Clay Swartz of Charleston, and daughter Teresa Swartz Roberts of Farmington, Maine; daughters-in-law and sons-in-law; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nephews and nieces; and many friends and former students.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dunbar and more recently attended Saint Andrew United Methodist Church in Saint Albans.
Eleanor will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend as well as a committed teacher. She grew up dancing, singing, and leading 4-H and dance clubs, and she played percussion instruments in the Dunbar High School band and performed as a majorette. She passed on her love of nature, heritage, and the arts to children in the communities where she made her home. As a teacher, she was especially talented at passing along a love of science. This talent was recognized when she was chosen to travel to California for special training to teach a nationally-acclaimed unit on the human heart.
Services will be held Saturday, January 7 at 1 p.m. at Keller Funeral Home in Dunbar. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 6 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Alzheimer's Association, 1111 E. Lee St., Charleston, WV 25301.
