Elinor Hyer Young, 86, of Hurricane and formerly of Dunbar, went from her earthly life to eternal peace surrounded by her loving family just before sunrise on Sunday, September 21, 2008.

She was born April 9, 1922 in Big Otter, Clay County, a daughter of the late Ernest and Dora Hyer.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, Robert; an infant son, Charles; and her grandson, Mark Stephens.

Elinor retired from the State of West Virginia with service in Employment Security and the Tax Department. She was a cook at Ford, Pierpont and Dunbar elementary schools and, as a member of this country's Greatest Generation, was an employee at the Naval Ordnance Center during World War II. Elinor was a member of the Dunbar United Methodist Church and the 13 Club. She was an avid cook, seamstress and gardener.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, W. C. "Connie" Young, formerly of Clendenin. Elinor is survived by daughters, Phyllis Stephens and husband, Steve, of Scott Depot; Jane Jones and husband, Don, of Rockwall, Texas; Janet Spry and husband, Doug, of Scott Depot; grandchildren, Ben Jones and Kristin Mathews; sister, Sally Crislip of Gassaway, WV; brothers James Hyer of North Ridgeville, Ohio; William Hyer of Lagrange, Ohio; and Harold Hyer of Fallston, Maryland.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Elinor's nephew, Marshall Hyer of North Ridgeville, Ohio, officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.

A special thanks to the medical staff at Charleston Area Medical Center Teays Valley who gave her such skilled, compassionate care during her recent illness.
