Obituary

Emogene Mattox Garland, 78, of South Charleston, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017 at home with her family by her side.

She was born in South Charleston.  She was the daughter of the late Susie Mattox Colbert and Evie Goins.

Emogene was educated in the Kanawha County School District. She attended Garnet High School and graduated from South Charleston High School in 1957.

She was employed with the State of West Virginia as a State Registrar with the Department of Vital Statistics for 44 years.  She was featured in Ebony magazine in 1960 as one of the first African-Americans employed by the State of West Virginia.

She was a devoted member of New Covenant Baptist Church. She was known for her loving and caring spirit and as an extended mother and grandmother to others.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Quenton S. Garland.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Paula Hill (son-in-law Larry Hill), Laura Garland of Charleston and Stephanie Carter (son-in-law Damon Carter) of Charlotte, North Carolina; grandchildren, Jamon Woodson, Kristen and Clyde Tyler Jr., Kristopher Woodson and Megan Woodson, Davon Woodson, Denise Hill all of Charleston, and Natalia Carter, Raia Carter, DeMire Woodson and Angie Woodson all of Charlotte, North Carolina; great-grandchildren, Khamari Welch, Daunevyn Woodson, Kristian Johnson, Amerie Taylor-Woodson, Tristen Woodson, Destinee Miller, Tyler Miller, Kenley Lacy-Woodson, Kamiyah Tyler, Kambria Tyler, Cavon Tyler, Trayvion Woodson, Kyree Woodson, Davon Woodson, Nysiaha Woodson; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Emogene's life will be held on Saturday, October 21, at New Covenant Baptist Church with the Pastor Linda Duncan officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with services beginning at 1 p.m.
