Frances Poling Geary, of Dunbar and Lady Lake, Fla., age 83, passed away at The Villages Hospice House on April 19, 2011.
She was born at Glasgow, a daughter of Edgar W. Poling and Ava Harper Poling.
She graduated from Ripley High School and later received a B. S. degree in Elementary Education from the West Virginia State University. She also studied at the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. She was a teacher in the Kanawha County School System for 21 years and while there she belonged to the NEA, WVEA and KCEA, serving as school representative many years. She also served as School Patrol Leader and took the students to Washington, DC for eight straight years from the old Pierpont School and Dunbar Elementary.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her former husband, Charles Kenneth Williams, her sister, Mary Janet Fisher, her brother, William E. Poling, Jr. and her eldest daughter, Debra Ann Williams.
She leaves to mourn her death her husband, Joseph J. Geary of Lady Lake, Fla; her daughter, Ava Marie Williams Shawkins and her husband, retired Lieut. Col. John W. Shawkins of Colorado Springs, CO; her son, Charles Eric Williams of Dunbar. Her brother, Charles Aden Poling also survives as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Frances was a Christian, having belonged to the First Church United Methodist of Dunbar for almost fifty years. She also attended the Chapel of All Faiths in Lady Lake while residing there.
She as a very active person, spending lots of time traveling, line dancing, playing Bocce and shuffleboard, golfing and swimming while residing in The Villages of Lady Lake. She also liked to knit, play cards, scrabble and work crossword puzzles.
Her services will be held at11a.m., Tuesday, April 26, at Keller Funeral Home in Dunbar. She will be interred in the Poling Family Cemetery, Kentuck, after the services which will be conducted by retired Pastor John Mason of Hurricane.
