Frances Lee
Sloan
August 7, 1934 – March 11, 2025
Frances Lee Sloan, 90, of Cross Lanes, West Virginia, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She passed away on March 11, 2025, after a short illness.
Frances was born on August 7, 1934 to Lorraine and Talmadge Speck in Charleston, West Virginia and grew up in Dunbar, West Virginia.
Frances started working while still in school at various jobs throughout the Kanawha Valley. She graduated from Dunbar High School as her class valedictorian in 1952 and then found her passion. She loved working as a seamstress at Polan's Style Shop in downtown Charleston - following in her mother's footsteps.
Frances met the love of her life, James Robert Sloan, Sr. (Bob), at the movie theater where she worked in high school. They were married on January 16, 1954 and spent forty years together before his death in 1994. Frances and Bob went on to have five children, James Robert, Jr., Mary Elizabeth, Kevin Andrew, Stephanie Lorraine, and Alyssa Ann. Although Frances left Polan's to start her family, she continued to work as a seamstress out of her home for over fifty years, making and altering wedding, bridesmaid, and prom dresses, as well as cheerleading, band, and majorette uniforms, show choir costumes, and clothing for the community. Doing work for local students brought her the most joy. Frances loved seeing the smile on a young person's face when their uniform or dress fit well!
In addition to raising her family and her sewing, Frances was a lifelong volunteer in her community. She spent countless hours at the Point Harmony Elementary School library in Cross Lanes, for years after her children attended. She was also a dedicated volunteer and parishioner at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Nitro and served on the Kanawha County Library Board.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob, and her brother, Glenn Robert Speck.
She is survived by her children, James Sloan, Mary Berry, Kevin Sloan, all of Cross Lanes, Stephanie Erwin of Poca, and Alyssa Sloan (Michael Funk) of Martinsburg, West Virginia; her grandchildren, Erica Sloan, Kevin Sloan, II, Sydney Sloan, Kayla Good, Davis Funk, and Calder Funk; and her great grandchildren, Isabella, Kyyah, Maverick, and Kentrell.
The family extends a special and heartfelt thank you to Kanawha HospiceCare and all of Frances's dedicated caregivers.
A funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar with Father John Fennell officiating.
Family will welcome visitors two hours prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
Entombment will take place in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.
