Garnette Summers Shawkins, 95, of South Charleston, passed away peacefully at her home on August 11, 2017, after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Walt Shawkins; daughter, Julie Shawkins; and granddaughter, Vicki Flowers.

Garnette and Walt were founding members of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Charleston. She was also a member of the Spring Hill Garden Club and an avid animal lover.

She is survived by her daughters, Eileen Talbert of Raleigh, NC and Linda Chestnut of Marianna, FL; sons, Lt. Col. John Shawkins, ret. (Ava) of Colorado Springs, CO and Guy Shawkins (Dale) of Dublin, OH; grandchildren, Terri Flowers, Debbie Bott, Dawn Hayes, Scott Burgess, and Zachary Shawkins.  She is also survived by her goddaughters, Kitty Palausky and Martha Guernsey; and a dear friend to Garnette, Scott Donahue.

The family would like to thank the angels on earth who took care of Garnette in her final years; John and Judith Kessinger, and Rachel Robinson.

A memorial service celebrating Garnette's amazing life will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Charleston.
