Obituary

Gilberto "Gil" Flores, Jr. passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at the age of 84.

He was born on February 18, 1940 in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Gilberto Sergio, Sr. and Christina Flores.  He was one of two children born into the loving Flores family.

At the age of 10, Gilberto Jr. moved with his family to El Paso, Texas where he spent his formative years.  He graduated from Bowie High School in El Paso in 1958 where he was a two-sport athlete, starring in baseball and leading his high school's team as quarterback.

Gilberto Jr. served his country for 22 years with honor and distinction becoming a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force, appointed as a Special Agent in the Office of Special Investigations.  His commitment to duty and unwavering dedication earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and superiors alike.

Following his distinguished military career, Gilberto Jr. transitioned to civilian life where he continued his commitment to public service.  For 22 years, he served as the Chief of Police at West Virginia State University where he made a lasting impact on the campus community and beyond.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilberto Sr. and Christina Flores; his stepson, Bryan Spangler; his granddaughter, Erika Rene Flores; and his great-grandson, Jorge Luis Murillo III.

Left to cherish his memory, are his beloved wife, Mary Flores; his sister, Maria Luisa Contreras; his children, Rosemary Hernandez, Martha Levario, Veronica Levario, Gilbert Rey Flores, Emily Wall, Daniel Flores; his stepson, PJ Spangler; his 19 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.

Gilberto Jr. will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.  His legacy of service, love, and devotion will forever inspire those whose lives he touched.

A service to celebrate the life of Gilberto Jr. will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 14 at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

"Though his smile is gone forever, and his hand we cannot touch, we shall never lose sweet memories of the one we loved so much."

May Gilberto Flores, Jr's soul rest in eternal peace.
