Obituary

Hazel Marie Cavender, 97, of Charleston, was born August 28, 1919 and passed away December 27, 2016 at Hubbard Hospice House West after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jarrell Dearth Cavender; her parents, Fred H. and Rose Jackson of Buffalo; daughter, Ruth Ann Vickers; grandsons, David W. Cavender and Joseph W. Vickers; brothers, James and Fred Jackson; sisters, Helen McIntosh and Rozella Swisher.

She is survived by her son, Edward L. Cavender, USN Ret., and wife, Margaret; sister, Lorraine Warner of Columbus, OH; 5 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves numerous nieces and nephews.

Hazel was a long-time member of Starcher Baptist Church. She loved our Lord, singing in the choir and served as a Deaconess and was a Trustee. She was famous for her lemon meringue pies.

The family extends their deepest gratitude for the loving care Hazel received from the EMTs, CAMC General Hospital staff and Hubbard Hospice House West.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV 25387.

Hazel requested no funeral service.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 31, at Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar, with Pastor David Workman officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the cemetery.

Arrangements are in care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
