Obituary

Helen Harmon, 89, of Dunbar died on Friday, March 20, 2015, at home after an extended illness.

She was the daughter of the late Otis and Golda Coffman and was born in Dunbar on January 1, 1926. She was a life-long resident of Dunbar where she made a home for her family. She was a Christian, a member of Dunbar First Baptist Church, and also attended Dunbar United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, parents, Otis and Golda Coffman, and her brother Ralph, of Houston, TX.

After graduation from Union District High School (Dunbar High) in 1944 where she was on the cheerleading squad, Helen worked for Union Carbide. It was during this part of her life that she met her husband who would be her constant companion for the next 63 years. When they married, she left the working life to have her three children, Beverly, Henry, and Mary. Helen was active in her children's life where she was always homeroom mother, a leader in the Brownies and 4-H, and spent many hours driving Henry's sports teams during his junior high school years. She returned to work as a pharmacy tech at Miller Drug Store in Dunbar and later at CAMC General. She retired in 1981. She loved dancing where she won several contests, traveling, and baseball.

Surviving are her children Beverly and Ken Farman of Rock Hill, SC, Henry and Joy Harmon of Hurricane, and Mary Harmon of Decatur, GA; six grandchildren Michael Harmon, Emily Harmon, Matthew Harmon, Stephanie Orem, Chris Farman, and Krystle Farman; and two great-grandchildren Landon and Everett Orem.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at Keller Funeral Home in Dunbar, with Reverend Dr. Okey B. Harless officiating. Burial will follow at Tyler Mountain Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm at Keller Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, March 25, 2015 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
