Obituary

Herman Wesley Riffee, 84, of Spring Hill Mountain passed away on Tuesday, September 18, 2018, surrounded by his three daughters.

Herman was a 1951 graduate of Dunbar High School where he played the trumpet in the band. He loved attending his high school reunions and kept close ties with many of his classmates. He attended West Virginia University, Morris Harvey, and graduated from West Virginia State College. Herman retired from Union Carbide as an Advanced Engineer Process Vessel Designer with over 30 years of service.

Herman married Irene Johnson in 1955 and they had three daughters. He was strict with his daughters but only because he wanted the very best for them. He worked very hard to put himself through college working several jobs while raising a family and vowed that his daughters would not go into debt to get an education. All three graduated from college and he was very proud of his girls.

Herman was baptized at a young age but reaffirmed his faith in May 24, 2018 and loved the Lord. He always attended church when he was well and able. He enjoyed studying the bible at home and with several local church bible study groups.

He loved to tinker with engines and motors and could fix just about anything; he took great pride in his home and his lawn. In his later years he became quite the traveler and enjoyed bus trips, cruises, and trips abroad. His most recent trips were to Turks and Caicos and Niagara Falls in 2016.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents, George Herman Riffee and Opal Marie Carney Riffee; his loving wife and soul mate, Irene Johnson Riffee; and his brother, Lyle Gene Riffee.

He is survived by his three daughters, Robin Riffee (Fred) of Gainesville, Fla., Cindy McNealy of South Charleston, and Amy Jo Riffee of Hurricane; five grandchildren, Alex Landa (Shailaja) of San Diego, Cal., Tessa Beal (Chris) of Eagle, Col., Tara Landa of Gainesville, Fla., J.K. McNealy and Melissa McNealy, both of South Charleston; and four great grandchildren Madison McNealy and Matthew Smith of South Charleston, and Georgia Shippey and Joshua Beal of Eagle, Col.; sister-in-law, Bettie Riffee; a niece and nephew from Dayton, Oh; and a special friend who he loved dearly, Doug Turley. Doug visited often, maintaining Herman's lawn and mowing equipment when he was no longer able to do so himself, and sharing stories.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 22, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Curtis Price Way, Charleston, WV 25311.
