Rev. Homer H. Davis passed peacefully at his home on the morning of January 27, 2021.
He was a native West Virginian, born on June 26, 1923 to Robert Houston Davis and Margaret Blanche Woods Davis.
Homer was educated in Kanawha County Public Schools, graduating from Garnett High School. He was a graduate of West Virginia State College and Bennett Theological Seminary. Among his notable achievements as a young man, Homer was hired as one of the first black firemen in the City of Charleston, and being employed as Charleston's first black disc jockey. In 1964, he completed the requirements for full membership in the Washington Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, and was ordained Elder on June 14, that same year.
At the age of 11, Homer joined Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church. At an early age, he became a member of Simpson's Adult Choir and later served as Interim Pastor there. After pastoring several parishes throughout West Virginia, he was appointed to the WV Annual Conference as District Superintendent of the Charleston District. Rev. Davis's many accomplishments in the Federal Government, civil rights activism, and the United Methodist Church are too numerous to mention.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Wilson Davis; daughter, Rev. Helen Davis Bell; sisters, Jean Davis Gilpin and Helen Davis Carr.
Rev. Davis is survived by his daughters: Claudette F. Patterson (Robert) of Charleston, Linda C. Horn of Raleigh, NC, and Mary M. Mason of Charleston; eight grandchildren; and a host of great grandchildren.
A private home going service will be held Monday, February 1, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, memorial services are planned for a future date.
