James Allen Copen, 93, of Cross Lanes, WV went home to be with the Lord on February 2, 2026. He passed peacefully at home.

Jim was born August 24, 1932 to Fred and Basil Copen in Elkview, WV.

Jim graduated from Elkview High School in 1951 and proudly served in the Air Force during the Korean War.  He was also a former member of the Air National Guard.  Jim retired from Verizon after 45 years of service and in 1975 he received the Bronze Medal of Honor for saving a young boy's life from rising flood waters.  He was a faithful member of Cross Lanes Baptist Church where he served on several committees.  Jim was an exceptionally talented woodworker and craftsman, even building an addition on the family home.  He also built a beautiful cradle for his granddaughters when they were born.  Anyone who knew Jim knew that his workshop was top notch!  More than that though, he was a friend to all.

Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife, Bea; parents, Fred and Masil Copen; and sister, Betty June Fields.

He is survived by his daughter, Kim Alvis (Sean); son, Jay Copen (Stephanie); brother, Jerry Copen (Sue); sister, Dreama Robertson (Larry); grandchildren, Gabe Alvis, Rachel, Hayley and Molly Copen, James, Robbie and Mary Huey.  He is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to The Withrow family, Bobby, Bubba, Todd, and countless other friends and neighbors who checked in, brought meals, and brought a bright spot to Jim's day.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 7 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar with Rev. Dr. Seth Polk officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
