Obituary

James Lee Steele, 70, of South Charleston, passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2017.

He was born November 27, 1946 at the family home in Maysburg, Logan County to Alta Browning and Birthal William Steele.

Jim was always interested in communications and was licensed as an amateur ham radio operator in the seventh grade. He graduated from Logan High School. Jim attended Southern West Virginia Community College and Marshall University where he earned a degree in Business. While he was at Marshall, Jim worked as the Assistant Manager of the Student Union; the night of the Marshall plane crash he opened the Student Union, providing a place for the students gather.

He was a Communications Specialist in the West Virginia National Guard serving overseas in Honduras; he made it possible for soldiers to stay in touch with their families through Amateur Ham Radio patch connections. He worked for Durfee's Cable Company in Parkersburg and the West Virginia Division of Emergency Management.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his former wife; his younger brother, Daniel Ray Steele; and sister-in-law, Cheryl Steele.

He is survived by his loving wife, Alice; his two daughters; his sister, Marilyn (Robert Haines); his nephews and nieces, Joy (Danny Cantley), Vilma (Dayton Price), Meriam (Rey Jabla), Shirley (Jerry Woody) and Tommy Raian Nogot (Luchie).

A visitation will be held at Dunbar United Methodist Church, 1401 Myers Avenue, Dunbar on July 7, 2017 from 5 to 7:00 p.m., with a funeral service following at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
