Obituary

Dr. James V. Stewart, 90, longtime Dunbar optometrist, was born September 6, 1917 and passed away on Monday, May 5, 2008 at CAMC-Memorial.

He began practice in 1949 and welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Steven W. Odekirk and daughter, Dr. Nancy S. Odekirk into practice with him in 1988. Up until his death, Dr. Stewart still came to the office, Dunbar Eye Associates, and enjoyed visiting with patients and adjusting and dispensing glasses.

Born in Charleston, Dr. Stewart was a lifelong resident of Dunbar and just this past year had moved to the Ridgemont at Edgewood Summitt. He was a US Army veteran of WW II, having served during 7 campaigns, and was discharged as a Master Sergeant. After returning from the war, he graduated from Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago and began his practice in Dunbar.

He was an avid golfer and bowler and was a jazz enthusiast, having played trombone in the Shrine band, beginning at the age of 50. He loved his music and enjoyed hosting a jazz party each spring.

Dr. Stewart was a lifetime member of Humphreys Memorial United Methodist Church and since moving to Charleston had been attending Christ Church United Methodist with his daughter and family.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Mary Macel Payne Stewart, his parents, Carroll and Lillian Stewart, his brother, Frank Stewart and sister, Alma Stewart Dawson.

He is survived by his son-in-law and daughter, Steve and Nancy Odekirk and his two grandchildren, Connor and Lillian Odekirk.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful "family" of staff and friends at the Ridgemont where Dr. Stewart has lived this past year. You have each been a blessing and will never be forgotten.

Also a special thank you to the extraordinary staff at CAMC-Memorial Division 3 West and the MICU unit for their gracious and loving care in the last week of Dr. Stewart's life.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, May 10, at 12 Noon, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Dr. Randy Flanagan officiating.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christ Church United Methodist, 1221 Quarrier Street, Charleston, WV 25301.
