Obituary

Janet Gayle Summers, 65, of Cross Lanes, left her earthly body for her heavenly home on May 10, 2010 following a five month battle with metastatic melanoma cancer. Janet's passing occurred peacefully with her loving husband by her side, and cared for by the earthly angels at the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.

Janet was married to the love of her life and soulmate, Arnold Lee Summers for 29 years. They were seldom apart. Arnold rarely left Janet's side during her illness, ever present, just as he was following a head on collision which nearly claimed her life in 1994.

Janet was a kind soul who loved to make those around her feel loved and welcome. Animals, flowers, gardening, reading, picking her extra large blackberries in the summer and spending time with her husband and family were some of the simple things in life that brought Janet much joy. She loved to cook a good meal and her potato salad was always a special request from her family. Janet's pride and joys were her beloved grandchildren, who rarely left empty handed from a visit to MaMa and PaPa's house.

Janet and Arnold traveled frequently to their second home in Phoenix, Arizona. While in Phoenix, Janet enjoyed playing bingo, working puzzles, yard saling, collecting afghans and treasures for her grandchildren and riding her 3 wheeled bike in the beautiful Phoenix weather.

In addition to her husband, Janet is also survived by her sons, William Gene Rhodes and wife, Kim of Cross Lanes, Scott Lee Summers and wife, Debbie of Charleston and Jeffrey Allen Summers and wife Susanne of Cross Lanes. Sister, Nancy Rader and husband Clark of Vienna, WV; brothers, James Goodson and wife Joetta of Kathleen, Florida, Bob Goodson and wife Loretta of Leroy, WV, John Goodson and wife Gladys of South Point, Ohio, Tom Goodson and wife, Mackie of Ripley, Don Goodson and wife Sandy of Albany, Ohio; half-sister, Shanda Hicks and husband Edward of Springdale, WV; half-brother, Delbert Woolwine and wife, Midge of Elkhart, Indiana. Sisters and brothers in law, Delbert and Betty Summers of Cross Lanes, Leotta Summers of Hurricane, Kenneth Summers of Cross Lanes; grandchildren, Ashley Elizabeth Summers of Morgantown, Lexie Faith Summers of Cross Lanes, Hayden Gabrielle Summers of Charleston, Amanda and Brandon Hazlett of Cross Lanes, and Samantha Hill of Charleston and niece Jeanna Summers Botkin, of Nitro whom Janet helped raise after her mother passed away, as well as many other nieces and nephews.

Also left to mourn Janet's passing are special friends in Phoenix, Dreama Layne, Chris and Larry Galaviz, Betty Thurman and special neighbors who loved Janet as their own family, Polo Banuelos and Maria Carrillo, and their children Elizabeth, Victor and Adrian. Also, her beloved cat, Simba.

"Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven." A celebration of Janet's life will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, May 14, at Keller Funeral Home in Dunbar, with Pastor Mike Elder officiating. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens in Cross Lanes.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 13, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.

A very heartfelt thanks you to the physicians and staff of St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, Dr. Stephen Jubelirer and the physicians, nurses and staff of Hubbard Hospice House, especially Sharon, who brought much joy to Janet in her final days. Their care and kindness was a blessing. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Janet's memory to the Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston, WV 25311.

Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
