Obituary

Jay E. Giffin, 78, went to his final commencement on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 following an extended cardiovascular battle.

He was born in Johnstown, PA on September 25, 1937 to the late Earl and Verona Rhoads Giffin.

Jay served three years as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force after graduating from Adams-Summerhill High School and the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Pittsburgh, PA.

After 33 years, he retired from South Charleston Union Carbide Technical Center as a Chemical Process Safety Engineer. While at Union Carbide he co-authored two textbooks for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Center for Chemical Process Safety and numerous papers, earned a Masters Degree from Marshall University, and served as an Adjunct Professor at Marshall and West Virginia University Graduate Schools, all in Chemical Process Safety Engineering. He also majored in Industrial Psychology at Morris Harvey College and worked on an MBA at WVU College of Graduate Studies.

Jay was a member and deacon of Calvary Baptist Church, a lifetime Mason and lifetime member of the Scottish Rite; a Shriner; a member of honorary fraternities Phi Theta Kappa, Sigma Tau, Omega Chi Epsilon, National Honor Society and Arnold Air Society; a member and officer of American Society of Safety Engineers, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and World Safety Organization; founder of Giffin Reunion Society; a lifetime member of North American Hunters Association and National Rifle Association; an Assistant Scoutmaster and member of Order of the Arrow for Boy Scouts of America; and PTA President and supporter.

He was preceded in death by his son, Craig Giffin.

Jay is survived by his wife, Hilda Figgatt Giffin, daughter, Kristi Giffin Eilerman and her husband, Todd, of Findlay, Ohio, grandchildren, Kaitlynn and Kassandra Eilerman of Findlay, Ohio; treasured sister, Donna Giffin Markum of Johnstown, PA; brother, Ronnie; sister, Carolyn; nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar with Rev. Dr. Archie Snedegar officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
